Sensing Love on this Valentine’s Day

There was once a Rock Band from the Middle Eastern desert and all the themes for their lyrics is about “Water,” so during an interview they were asked why.  One member of the band responded, “We sing about water because that is our lack.”  Then He further questioned, “Is it the same reason why Westerners are always singing about “Love”?
Well what do we really know about Love?  As we approach this Valentine’s Day celebration, I choose to look at Love and why it feels like there’s not enough to go around for everyone.

My 9 yrs old daughter and I were talking about Love the other day and she shared an interesting view of what she thinks it means.  According to her, Love is how we feel about each other.  I don’t want to be misunderstood here because I also believed that Love was just a feeling.   I also reflected on some changesthat we go through that seems to affect our feelings so it is logical to say that Love too does change; and then it suddenly dawned to me that Love appeals to all our five senses instead of just one- our feelings.  In our little analysis we realized that we can feel, see, hear, smell, and taste Love.  I bet you are probably pondering the dynamics of understanding Love on such a basic level.

Our five senses does play a vital role in the way we express Love.  Take for example everything and everyone you can possibly love and grasp from your imagination or recollection how you experience love when you eat your favorite food, smell the most appealing fragrance, hear when someone beckoned the words: “I Love You.”  I intentionally left the sense of sight and touch for last since they are more complex ways in which Love is expressed.  On another interesting note they both also share some parallels in that although there is a clear distinction between the two they do influence each other at all times.

Personally, I can say that I feel love the way I see it.  In other words, my interpretation of Love will determine how I feel and vice versa.  I believe that this is where things get complicated and perplexed.  Since there is no universal language of Love, its interpretation is quite unique as each individual thus the unwillingness to understand this leads to misinterpretations and feelings of unlove.  When we all start realizing that Love’s expressions are embedded in all our senses we won’t get too warped up into our feelings anymore.  The more love we pour inside us instead of looking to others for love, the more there is to give and in so many different ways.  As a result, there will also be more than enough to go around as well.

Happy Valentine's Day y'all!!!
